Week # 16 : Final Assignment

First of all, I would like to thank you Professor Claudia and all of the classmates since I have learned a lot of things from reading your blogs and comments that you post.  I feel like my world has opened more on the social media marketing.

Before taking the class, I knew only a few social media platforms and was too afraid to try new things myself.  Now I've learned that there are so many platforms I should try and use to promote my business.  Most importantly, it's not about how many platforms I have BUT it's all about the consistency and how often I use each platform effectively.

As a marketer, I always consider customers as a King but with social media influences, customers are beyond King.  They have their voices clear and loud via social media that make companies listen to their opinion, complaints, and feedback.

Using social media can be a double-edged sword for the business itself since the good and bad contents can easily spread throughout social media world just in a second.  That's why each business has to make sure that they have a great social media team who takes care well of this area.  Otherwise, it will be a nightmare for the business at the end.

For my business, I will use only 3 main platforms which are Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to promote the business.  With these platforms, I definitely have to use their analytical data to help me understand more about customers and how to run the promotion through it.

Thanks again for all your help and input!  Please keep in touch and I wish everyone to be successful on what you're going to do in the future.  Good luck!  👋👋👋

Week # 15B : Facebook Analytics

Gin Arai has 82 likes total (included 3 likes this week).  In the picture above, there are 7 page views and we can see how each post can reach the audiences as shown in the picture below.

One of Facebook analytics I think is very useful and helps me to see how often Gin Arai fans are online and what time they are checking on their Facebook daily as you can see below.

Week # 15A : Optimising and Analyzing Data

Although there are many different ways to analyze the data by using Google Analytics or FaceBook, both of them have some common tools.  I will use Google Analytics to provide reports that I can sort and play around to see what I need for my business, for example,  target market, customer demographics, numbers of website visitors, etc.

We all know how important to spend more time on marketing analyze in order to understand the market you are in and also target customers.  This would take more time to learn and understand how each analytic tool works since there are too many tools to choose from.  No matter what tool I will choose to use, I will make sure to have at least 25% of my time to sit down and collect information I need to prepare and learn how to improve my business.

Week # 14 : Creating Social Ads

Facebook Ad:

At the beginning, I will use only Facebook ad first since I'm familiar with it and it would be the one I use more often.  The objective to use Facebook ad will be creating a brand awareness to audiences by using images and videos to get more attention on the ad.

Week # 13B: FaceBook Ad

As I mentioned in my previous post about Facebook Ads, I'm still questioning about it BUT unfortunately that I have no other choice to just do everything I can to promote my business.  Then Facebook Ads would be the best choice to promote through social media platforms since I'm familiar with it.

There are 3 formats to do Facebook ads depending on which areas the ads will show on the feed.
1. Right column (on the side of the feed): this one is the cheapest one but seems like a real commercial ad that might not get much attention from the audience.
2. Desktop News Feed: this would be something that I consider to use and together with the mobile news feed as well.
3. Mobile News Feed

If I'm going to pay for the ads on Facebook, I will definitely have to use "visual" ads to draw attention from the audiences. At the beginning stage (the first couple months), it would be something fun but not a hard sales ads since I want to just introduce about Gin Arai and let them know what we're doing.  The ads have to make us different from other meal-kit delivery companies out there.

Talking about the target group, I probably start to promote locally first in order to learn the system and make sure everything runs smoothly.  Due to a tight budget, it would be a trial period for us to study how the ads run and what we gain customers from using Facebook ads.  After a while and hopefully having some money, we will expand more to target the whole California and at this point, we will go crazy to promote our business to the real customers.

I can't wait to see how the ads would help us grow our business!

Week # 13A: Social Media Advertising

I've been seeing some social advertising from Blue Apron, Plated, Sun Basket, and Marley's Spoon.  Since they are big players in the meal-kit delivery service industry, they have planned out their ads professionally and very attractively to reach audiences.

Their ads have either images or a short video to draw attentions.  I think the most effective way to reach the audience is using videos since people have many choices and posts to read on their feeds.  Videos would get them to stop and watch even a couple seconds, it's already good enough.

Moreover, they also have a clear call to action, for example, "Sign Up Now", "Buy Now and Save 20%", or "Get Your First Box...Free!" button.

Comparing with traditional ads, social media ads have been questioning whether they are really working the ways they're supposed to.  When it comes to make a decision if I have to buy social ads to promote my business, I have to ask myself this question over and over again.  I know it's hard to boost my business if I only rely on increasing "organic" reaches.  Whether "paid" ads work or not, I don't think I have many choices to do except only jumping on the same wagon as others do to promote their business with "paid" social media ads.

Week # 12B : Project research activity options

As we know that Google+ is important to increase SEO for the business, however, I'm not sure how I can use Google+ to endorse or even introduce my business to any groups in Google+.  I personally don't use Google+ at all and I'm too worried about time limitation I have to manage all social media platforms.  I would rather keep them only main social media that I use them for sure as effective and productive tools.

Most of the companies use Groupon to drive more traffic to their businesses but there are many downsides, for example, only one-time buyers, too many customers all at one time, and low margin at the end.

Week # 12A : Other Social Media Tools

For all four additional online marketing tools, I believe that using Google+, Yelp, and Google Maps would help me grow my business.  Google + and Google Maps are great tools since it would help my SEO.

However, with a time constraint, I'm afraid that I won't be able to update or keep track every social media that I have.  At the beginning stage, I would rather focus only 5 main social media platforms which are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Week # 11A : Email Newsletters

Since Gin Arai is a brand new business, I would plan how to use newsletters by using a timeline as a phase of a business cycle to help us organize and plan what content we will send out to clients.  Luckily, I have been teaching Thai cooking classes around San Diego area for 7 years so I have a list of email contact information of my students who took classes with me.  Therefore, I will have them as a group of existing customers who know me well in person.  The followings are the contents and timelines on what I plan to use newsletters effectively:

At the beginning, I will use email as a relationship building tool.  Since I already have a great relationship with these existing clients, the content will be an introduction email about Gin Arai, let them know why I start this business and how they will get a benefit from Gin Arai.  Moreover, I will encourage them to connect with all Gin Arai's social media platforms.

After a while, the content would be drive sales tools that promote products, promotion, or a special sale by having a call to action on the email.

For other information, we may send out the content to update our weekly menu, food pictures, or other video links as well.

I will start signing up for my competitors' newsletters to learn what they do to see what I like and don't like about and what topics or contents they send out their newsletters.  This way definitely will help me understand more how e-newsletters work and make a decision later on how often I should send it out.

Week # 10B : Categories for blogs

What a great idea to collect all scattering ideas on what I plan to post on Social media and then put them into each category!  I can see by doing this would help me stay organized and focus more.  The most important thing is that it will help ease my stress level to not pressure myself when it's time to post something on social media.

Since I have too many ideas, so I decide to separate them into 2 big categories by the type of each post:
- Images / text
- Videos

Then from those two categories will have its own sub-categories that would be something interesting for my audience in each subjects as following:
- Ingredients
- How to cook
- Cooking Tip
- Opinions about Thai food
- Sightseeing in Thailand
- About Thailand
- etc.

However, all of these categories are initial groups that would help me plan and stay focus to find or create my own content to write on each post.  Using "HootSuite" will help me schedule my posts for all social media platforms that I use.

Week # 10A : Blogging for Business

Adding human interest to a post definitely appeal to peoples emotions since human beings live on emotions and feelings. What if we don't have no feeling on anything, we would turn to be a robot!  That's why I think using an emotional message on a blog would add it more attractive for visitors.

However, not all businesses can use much of personal touch.  It depends on how professional the company is, how casual the way company runs, and what type of products it sells.  For my business, Gin Arai, I will use myself as the face of my company.  Then I plan to play around with emotions, feelings, and personal touches on my blog in order to communicate with customers and let them know that I'm a real person and the owner of the company!

I also added Google Analytics on my blog as it's shown at the left bottom of my blog (a picture below).  I'm not sure that I did it correctly or not, please anyone advises me.

Week # 9 : Twitter

For my upcoming business, I don't plan to use Twitter to be a main social platform since I personally don't have much experience of using it and I feel that Twitter needs more attentions to update and more time consuming.  I get a little bit intimidated to use Twitter.

However, after getting to know a bit more about Twitter, I may consider to use it as a part of social media plan for Gin Arai.

The keywords I used to search are "meal-kit delivery", "meal prep", and "ingredient box".  Surprisingly, these keywords give me similar results.  As it's shown in the picture, I separate a group of people or companies into:

- Influencers: writer, bloggers, or consumers
- Who else: other meal-kit delivery companies

I would think the best time to post on Twitter either lunch time or dinner time when people have a short break from their work or their daily life.

Week # 8B : YouTube

When I personally use Facebook and Instagram, I always scroll down to past posts that don't have image or video.  It's just because I don't have much time to read...what a good excuse, right?  Actually, I'm too lazy to read but love watching videos instead. 😅

Talking about the business side, it depends on what type your business is in.  Luckily, my upcoming business is in food service area that I can communicate with potential customers by using visual media.   Let's think about the sight of food.  The expression "eat with your eyes" is certainly true because when a dish is visually appealing, it's more appetizing.

As I mentioned in my post before about other companies in this type of business, there are 4 big companies which are Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, Plated, and Marley's Spoon.  I've been studying on what they're doing to get to know their styles of posts they apply.  All of them heavily use their visual media to post pictures and videos through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.  Not only do they have a lot of followers and likes, but also they communicate well with their customers.

The more I do research on these established companies, the better I learn and understand who customers are and how to approach them.

Week # 8A : Get Visual

There are so many social media platforms that companies can choose.  In my case, Gin Arai is a Thai meal-kit delivery service.  When I choose which platforms are the best use for my company, I make a decision based on these following factors:

- a natural type of the business: it's a food business.
- visual images needed?: yes! One picture worth ten thousand words.
- video needed?: definitely! it's more attractive to show videos of food, cooking, or other related videos.
- explanation needed?: since we're a new company, we need to give more information to our potential customers who we are and what we're doing.  So I think we will use a lot of info-graphic images or videos to make it more interesting.
- time & management?:  this one is the most important thing since it doesn't matter how many social media your company has BUT it does matter how effectively you use each platform.

The social media platforms I plan to use are:
- Facebook
- Instagram
- Twitter
- Pinterest
- YouTube

Week # 7B: Facebook Content Plan

I've scheduled these 3 posts and put them in the order by its content.  Since Gin Arai is a brand new business, we want to give more information about our company to create a "Brand Awareness" at the first stage.  Then I start with the first post that helps our potential customers know to pronounce our company name correctly.  For other two posts, I just give interesting content that audience wants to check it out and I try not to sell too much of my products or services since people could get bored with all sales pitches after awhile.

If you notice, I set up to post it on daily basis during lunch time when people take a break from work.

For me, creating content with pictures and videos is not a hard part since I know what contents I want to use but the most difficult part is "writing" a post.  I have a hard time to write it down and have a tendency to overthink due to lack of confidence in writing!  I hope I would get better soon if not, it would be a BIG problem!

Week # 7A: Like as my page

To be honest, at first, I had no idea what business I would choose to like as my page since I don't even know the names of magazines, media companies, or bloggers.  Luckily that most of the companies in a meal-kit delivery service business are well established, for example, Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, Plated, and Marley Spoon.  Then, I got the idea why don't I just study and see which businesses these companies choose to "like" as their pages.

I immediately started to make a list and separated the companies I found with a type of business as follow:
- Food distributor
- Magazine
- Media, News
- Public Figure
- Society & Culture website
- Home & Garden
- Personal Blog
- Health & Beauty
- TV Show
- NGO

I initially had about 75 businesses to go through.  After that, I searched to see which businesses would be the ones that my audiences are interested in.  I ended up with 50 pages that I chose to like.  I believe that I will learn a lot of things from these pages and see what they post on their pages as well.  Can't wait to explore more what I can grow my business with this feature of Facebook!

Week # 6B: Reach & Engagement

In order to make it easy to understand how these two terms are totally different, I'd like to make a simple analogy to compare a business as a kid in the school.  Thinking like this might help me to set out my plans for two different approaches depending on whether I am a new kid in the school or not.  Let's discuss each strategy one at the time.

#1. In case that I'm a new kid at the new school = a brand new business
As a new kid, of course, I would be so nervous to introduce myself to other kids on the first day but no matter what I still have to do this to get to know who would be my friends.  At first, I probably "reach" out as many kids as I can and introduce myself to them.

It's just like I'm creating a "brand awareness" of myself to other kids to know about me.  At this moment, I probably don't care much how many kids actually want to be my friends but at least I put my name out there even they slightly know who I am.  Obviously, it doesn't mean that everyone who knows me would come to talk to me but just some kids decide to introduce themselves to me and get to know each other more.

#2. In this case, I want to find my close (best) friends = an established business
Once I stay in the same school for awhile, now it's time to find my best friends and be a part of a group.  This would be a harder part since I might need to do some studying on each group of kids in my class and see who they are, what their interests are, or even what they don't like about.  Then I have to think which group(s) I really fit in and whether they will accept me to be their friends.

Now it's time to create some "engagements" among these kids to know more about me.  I have to make my personalities shine, show them how cool I am, and why they want to be my friends.  As you know, not all of your friends are your best friends.  It takes a long time to build "trust, loyalty, and relationship" to have best friends whom I can freely communicate with.  It's very important to keep a great relationship with my best friends no matter how hard to do but I still keep in touch with them regularly.

I hope that my analogy makes sense enough to explain what differences between "reach" and "engagement" are.  If you're running a business, first of all, you should ask yourself what your goal of using Facebook is, what stage of your business is, and, more importantly, how you can make it better to reach your customers or get them to get involved with your Facebook pages!

Week # 6A: Alternate Assignment

I set up Gin Arai Facebook page in March'17 when I first had the business idea.  I immediately started it since I want to make sure that the business name I wanted to use was still available.  After that, I didn't do anything much since I had to prepare other things to set up my business.

Recently, I came back to update the page to make sure that everything was set up correctly and ready to use when the business is about to launch.  I just invited only my family and close friends to like my page.  So now I have only 60 likes.

I have been studying hard on how other companies in the meal-kit delivery business use their Facebook pages.  There are 5 companies as follows:
1. Thai Direct 999 likes
This company would be very similar to my company since they are a start-up company and focus only local customers in NY.  It seems like they update their posts on and off which are about 5 posts a month.  I totally understand their position since it's hard to update their page due to time and (probably) money.

These four companies below are established companies.  They're well-known companies and have been in business for a long time.  They have a great number of their followers.  Obviously, they have a great social media team taking care well of their pages.

2. Blue Apron : 1.8M likes  Post 1-2 times a day.
3. Hello Fresh : 1.35M likes  Post 3-4 times a day.  They post more videos and each week they use Facebook "Live" to connect with their customers.
4. Plated : 269K likes  Post 2-3 times a day.
5. Marley Spoon : 223K likes  Post 1-2 times a day.

Week # 5B : Gin Arai Target Market Analysis

Gin Arai Target Market Analysis

In order to understand Gin Arai target group, I've spent more time studying on established companies in a meal-kit delivery service industry, for example, Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, Plated, Marley Spoon, etc.  I'd like to separate the way to analyze Gin Arai target market under two categories:

Demographics:

  • Young & busy working professional singles
  • Young families with working parents (dual household income earners)
  • Middle-and upper-income
  • Have more disposable income
  • Live in urban areas

Psychographics:
    • Eating healthy and staying fit
    • Don’t have much spare time
    • Willing to pay a premium-priced meal
    • Like the convenience and value, especially compared with eating out, ordering in, or shopping at expensive city grocery stores
    • Love to try new, adventure, interesting ingredients and recipes that they might not be able to normally find easily in their local markets
    • Interesting in cooking and Asian food, especially Thai cuisine
    • Enjoying the benefits of cooking and eating at home, without the hassle of planning creative meals and shopping for groceries
    • Want high-quality ingredients and food

    Week # 5A: Target Market Analysis

     VS

    No doubt that I chose these two companies since they are restaurants and this will help me understand more about the food business as well.  Luckily, I'm so familiar with them since they're one of my family restaurants when we go eat out.

    Let me keep this analysis simple by comparing them side by side:

    Demographics:
    Psychographics:
    Chili’s
    * has a large consumer base
    * families of all ages
    * franchise restaurants (a big corporate)
    * convenient locations
    * middle income

    * family/ group style dining
    * affordable dining
    * a laid-back, casual atmosphere
    * want higher quality food than a fast food chain
    * internet user (kid’s friendly)
    * Spicy, Tex-Mexican-style food eaters
    * special deal lovers

    Teri Cafe
    * teenager, young people up to 45
    * working class
    * middle income
    * local only in Oceanside, CA
    * fast food/ takeout restaurant
    * very cheap with a big portion meal
    * Asian, Japanese, Hawaiian style food
    * want to support the local business
    * easy outgoing people

    If we only look at their websites, we could see several differences between these two companies as follows:

    Chili's is more professional and global like.  On their home page has two calls to action which are "promotion" offer banner and "online order" that customers can just order food on the website by using a curbside pickup service.  Their design has a clean look and very user-friendly.

    On another hand, Teri Cafe uses a vide to show its atmosphere that they are fast food or takeout restaurant, unfortunately, that I get annoyed with this video after watching it for awhile.  With their story, they have been running their business for a long time and only focus local customers.  They don't take orders online or don't have a promotional offer as a call for action through their website at all.

    Week # 4C: My favorite websites

    First, I'm not a shopaholic but there are two websites that I visit in a daily basis.  It sounds crazy and I don't know why I have to check and see whether they have new products on the sites.

    1. Amazon
    I have so many great things to say about Amazon.  I and my husband has been shopping with them since we started dating in 2005.  At that time, we even joked around that we would buy their stocks which were about $100 per share.  Unfortunately, we didn't do it.  It was a big mistake we ever made since it's now $986 per share!!!

    Let alone their amazing customer service, Amazon has the best friendly-user website.  Although they have products posted on their site close to 400 million items, you don't even notice it since the way they organize all products into product categories/ departments.  It's so convenient for clients to search for items they want in just a second.  Moreover, they even give you a list of suggested items that you might be interested in buying by using client's previous orders.  This is a big trap that I always fall in.  Well done!  ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

    Nobody is perfect, right?  The downside of having million products can be overwhelming for the first time users since they probably don't know where to start and how to search for products they want.  Once they get used to it, they will definitely enjoy shopping more and more...just be careful!

    First time I knew about Memebox was when I saw their promotion ad video on Facebook about Pore Remodeling Mask.  The video looks so gross but it really caught my attentions that I visited their site and bought at least 5 items for my first visit.  They use social media to promote their products, especially with their Facebook page.  They have 777K likes which is quite successful for a company that just started in 2012.

    Their website is simple, clean and easy to use.  The great thing I love about this site is that they use a short video to demonstrate how to use their products.  Using video is a great marketing tool since their products are made in South Korea and are so new for American customers.  Videos don't even give information about the products but they show to their audience how the products really works by using ordinary people instead of supermodels.  Furthermore, you can read reviews from real customers who bought the products from their site.  It makes you feel like you can trust and make a decision to buy right on a spot.

    I have been using Memebox site for over 2 years and I have no problem using it at all.  I don't see anything that they can improve since their site is way too easy to search for products I'm looking for and I end up buying more what I really wanted 😂😂😂

    Week # 4A : Web Design & Brand Aesthetics

    Two websites that need improvements:

    1. Penny Juice

    # The first thing I found a BIG mistake on their front page is about FlashPlayer (shown as below). I had to take another step to enter the site or just give up and forget about it.
    How to improve: I guess that they built it a long time ago and it's time to update to be a responsive website for any kind of format.

    After choosing the right platform, I got to see their second page with vibrant color and designs. However, I still didn't know exactly what they're doing or what the product they're selling.  Then I had to choose from those 5 links.
    How to improve: At this point, they should give an initial information about the company by adding either a company's tag line or a short company's description here.  It's very important to inform the visitor who you are at the very beginning of the site.

    # The worst thing happened when I clicked one of those links to find out more about the company and now my patience was totally gone!  I just couldn't force myself to read what they had on the page.
    How to improve: Due to contrasting colors and alignments, they can easily design with only one simple color for its background and then separate contents by using paragraphs to make it easy for the reader to follow the page.

    2. Arngren

    # The word that came to my mind when I opened the website is a "MESS".  Sorry for such a strong word but it is unorganized, confused and full of difficulties with many links on the left.
    How to improve: They need to reorganize their pages by having main product categories that link with many products listed after that.

    # I felt like playing a jigsaw puzzle to find a piece of information I needed, for example, a company's contact information.  If you're lucky enough, you would find it 😅😅😅
    How to improve: The main problem is that there are so many things going on their page.  They need to make the important content stand out and catch the reader's eyes.

    # I was so shocked to see "Christmas" banner at the bottom of the page.  It shows that they don't update their website at all.
    How to improve: The easiest way to improve this issue is just taking away the banner since it doesn't add any value on the website at all.

    Two websites that have done right:

    1. Riverside Art Center

    # First impression is their "subscription" pop-up page.  It's a call for action button that helps remind a visitor to sign up for their email list.
    # I like the design since it's very simple, clean, and organized.  They separate the contents on the front page by using two colors, orange and green which are related directly to their logo.
    # The menu bars on the top of the page contains detailed information for whatever a visitor wants to find out about them.
    # They even promote their Facebook page and encourage a visitor to "Like" it immediately.

    2. Apple

    I do believe that over 80% of our classmates would choose Apple as a great example of all.  Who doesn't like Apple?  Even checking on their website, it already convinces me to buy a new iPhone8! How does Apple website really influence me?
    # A well-designed website is the main reason here.  It looks modern and makes you feel like you're a next generation of the future if you use Apple's products.
    # The website has a great friendly user interface.  It's easy to navigate the site even for the first time user.
    # They use high-resolution pictures to show their products.  They don't need to put much information to describe what the products are since the pictures say it all.
    # Their design aesthetics really make me trust the brand and definitely influence credibility in their products.

    Week # 3C: How Meal-Kit Delivery Companies use their social media!

    First of all, I'd like to give you a quick introduction about my upcoming business that I plan to launch as soon as the website is finished.  It's called "Gin Arai" in Thai meaning "What to eat".  There is a short video on the website to show you how Gin Arai works.  I haven't done anything to promote my business yet since I patiently wait until the website is live.

    Please check and give a feedback for all social media listed in the table that I just set up and plan to use when the company gets going.  Feel free to subscribe and like if you guys want to be the first followers!

    * Please note that I gathered information on Sep 9,17.
    * I prioritize these companies by the numbers of "Likes" and "Subscribers" to show how well they manage their social media.
